Vietnamese Paint Industry
Starting at the ‘50s decade for making of oil paint, most of paint manufacturers made resins for their own use. However, it was enough for the country at that time in simple use. Then, during the war and plus one decade follow the re-united the country in 1975, the increase of consumption had been at very slow.
In the year of 1986, Viet Nam looks for “ doi moi “ the economy. They had changed the planning-economy into market. Together with that, Vietnamese paints have been significant growth. However, they were still at solvent based, in old technology with cooking themselves alkyd resins from many kind of vegetable oil in the market. In end of ‘80s years, they begin to import alkyd resins for making their paint for more high quality. At the time, the main applications are still for decorative in wood, metal surfaces. Time by time, manufacturers have learned more in making of good quality paints, but still at tradition ways, mainly in using more suitable materials as well as additive. But, for high quality and special application, paints were imported from abroad.
In year of ‘ 90s, there were some foreign invest for paint manufacturing which were more concentrate in water base, try to replace the current imported-paint from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia…
Some first players coming like TOA (Thailand), Wason (Philippine), Dutch Boy (Thailand), then, Akzo Nobel, ICI, Nippon, Expo, Terraco. …While that, local people starting to know how to make emulsion paints and very soon, they let the market know their name such as Donasa, Tison, A Dong paint and others.
In general, most of the big players in the world already have factories in Vietnam.
From that day to now, it faces with strong competitions, and after that in the market which names such as: ICI, Nippon, Akzo Nobel, Jotun, Kova, Mee Kwuang (Expo), Terraco, Dong Nai paint, Hasyn paint, Hai Phong paint, Ha Noi paint, Bach Tuyet paint,..and etc.,…. have well known . Most of them select their strong point for growing.
The latest coming Vietnam is powder coatings like Oxyplast, TigerdryLac and Akzo Noble which already have production here.
Now, there are wide ranges of paints / coatings are made in Vietnam for many applications from decorative to special industry. In general we have decorative paint, industry paint, heat resistant paint, marine paint, zinc-rich paint, clear lacquer for wood, coil coating, stoving paint, automotive re-finish paint, powder coating…
Some of them also export to other countries.
It is around 100,000 mt to 120,000 mt per year for both water based and solvent-based paints made in Vietnam. Average growth in 15- 25% per year for during time of 1996 to now (2002).
