Agricultural sector has been playing a vital role to the Thai economy, despite the expansion of industrial development in the recent years. Besides, many crops have been sufficiently producing to cope with the increasing local consumption and industrial demand, such as paddy, rubber, maize and fruits, etc., some of them are surplus for export to earn foreign currency.
However, considering that land use for agriculture being very limited, productivity is another important factor to raise agricultural yields.

The objective of the national agricultural policy is to increase yield per hectare. This means the use of better seeds, increasing use of chemical fertilizers and crop protection, improving irrigation and agricultural practices, as well as continuing the development of fertilizer industry in Thailand.

The Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Royal Thai Government entered into the joint venture with Metro Co., Ltd., Nissho Iwai Corporation (at present, Sojitz Corporation) and Central Glass Co., Ltd. of Japan, to establish Thai Central Chemical Company Limited on March 6, 1973 with initial registered capital of 120 million Baht.
